Autologous blood therapy

PRP treatment for the hair: what your own blood can really do.

PRP is probably the most talked-about treatment for hair loss – hyped by some, dismissed by others. As so often, the truth lies somewhere in between. Here we explain, without any marketing fog, how the autologous blood therapy works, who it is worthwhile for and where its limits lie.

The basics

What is PRP – and why blood, of all things?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Your platelets are little repair workers – they release growth factors wherever the body needs to regenerate tissue. The idea behind PRP treatment: concentrate exactly these growth factors and deliver them precisely to where tired hair follicles need support.

All it takes is a small blood draw, just like at your GP's. In the centrifuge, the components are separated – what remains is the golden-yellow plasma with a many times higher concentration of platelets than in normal blood. No foreign substance, no medication: it is your own blood, simply sorted.

The procedure

A PRP session in four steps.

Blood draw

A small amount of blood from a vein in your arm – it takes two minutes and is the most unremarkable part of the appointment.

Preparation

Around ten minutes in the centrifuge separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other blood components.

Microinjections

The concentrate is delivered shallowly into the scalp of the affected areas with fine needles – after numbing cream, if you wish.

Back to your day

No bandage, no downtime. Just hold off on sport, sauna and hair washing until the next day.

An honest assessment

Who PRP makes sense for – and who it doesn't.

Good candidates

  • Hereditary hair loss in the early to intermediate stages
  • Diffuse hair loss, e.g. after periods of stress
  • Thinning along the parting in women
  • Support during the graft-anchoring phase after a hair transplant
  • Fine, weak hair with follicles that are still active

Where PRP won't help

  • Completely bald areas with long-inactive follicles
  • Scarring forms of alopecia (see a dermatologist first)
  • As a "miracle cure" without clarifying the cause

In these cases we talk openly about alternatives – from a hair transplant to the recommendation to do nothing at all for now.

What does the research say?

Several controlled studies and reviews show improvements in hair density and hair thickness in androgenetic hair loss – although the effect size varies depending on the study, protocol and patient. In short: a well-documented chance, not a guarantee. And that is exactly how we advise you.

PRP FAQ

The most common questions about PRP treatment.

What exactly is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It is obtained from a small amount of your own blood: in the centrifuge, the platelets and their growth factors are concentrated, and it is precisely this concentrate that is then delivered into the scalp with fine needles.
Does PRP really help against hair loss?
Honest answer: there is a growing body of studies with encouraging results, especially for hereditary and diffuse hair loss in the early to intermediate stages – but the effect varies from person to person, and no one can honestly promise you a guarantee. That is why we document every patient's progress with photos and take honest stock after the initial series.
How many PRP sessions do I need?
The usual approach is an initial series of three sessions about four weeks apart. After that, depending on your progress, a top-up every four to six months is generally enough. With us, a single session costs 199 €, the 3-session package 499 €.
Does the PRP treatment hurt?
These are fine microinjections – most people describe it as a brief pinprick, easy to tolerate. If you wish, we can numb the scalp beforehand with a cream. The blood draw beforehand is just like at your GP's.
How quickly will I see results?
Hair grows in cycles, so patience is needed: many people notice less hair shedding after six to eight weeks, and realistically visibly thicker hair after three to six months. We take before photos at every appointment – so you can see your progress objectively.
What side effects does PRP have?
Since the plasma comes from your own blood, allergic reactions are practically ruled out. Mild redness, swelling or a feeling of tightness at the injection sites may occur for one to two days. You should take a break from sport and sauna for 24 hours.
Who is PRP not suitable for?
In completely bald areas whose follicles have been inactive for years, PRP cannot wake anything up – there, a hair transplant would be the more honest option. We are also cautious with certain blood clotting disorders, acute scalp infections and during pregnancy. We clarify all of this in advance during your consultation.
How much does a PRP treatment cost in Cologne or Aachen?
At HM HairMedical: 199 € per single session, 499 € for the 3-session package. Combined with mesotherapy and polynucleotides, the SuperNachsorge package is available for 948 €. Consultations and progress checks are free of charge – all prices on the price page.
Can I combine PRP with other treatments?
Yes – we frequently combine PRP with mesotherapy or polynucleotides, and after a hair transplant PRP is a core element of aftercare. What makes sense for you is determined by the hair analysis.
I had my hair transplant in Turkey – can I have PRP with you?
Yes, gladly – for us that is everyday practice. Details on the PRP after Hair Transplant page. You do not need any records from your clinic.

Is PRP the right choice for your hair?

That's not something to decide from behind a screen – but a 20-minute hair analysis can. Free of charge, in Cologne or Aachen, and with an answer that is also allowed to be "no".
